Practice Policies
All swimmers must be registered with Montgomery County Department of Recreation prior to participating in swim practice.
Once registered, swimmers can attend as many or as few practices as they'd like. Swimmers who attend as many practices as possible get the most from the summer swim season.
Basic Practice Rules:
- Safety first! Swimmers should never run, wrestle, or horseplay on the pool deck. This includes not entering the pool unless instructed to do so by a coach.
- Try to be on time! It can be very distracting when swimmers arrive late or midway through various drills or activities.
- If you arrive late to practice, please be ready to get in the water within 10 minutes of arrival. This is especially important for older swimmers, as younger swimmers see and look up to their older and bigger teammates. Show some hustle and set a good example!
- Respect the coaches and listen to them! They work hard, often with many swimmers in a lane, to help each swimmer improve and grow during practices.
- Have fun!
Practice Groups
There are two practice sessions the first couple weeks of practice (before school ends for the summer). Generally, the first practice (5:45-6:30) is for younger swimmers and those new to swimming and the second practice (6:30-7:30) is for older and/or more experienced swimmers. If you are unsure as to which practice your child should attend, you should discuss that with one of the coaches after practice.
Once school is out for the summer, practices shift to three different options: Monday - Friday 7-8 am and 8-9 am, and Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 8-9 pm. All of these practices are open all swimmers. Coaches group swimmers in different lanes of the pool according to age and ability. The morning practices tend to be less crowded than the evening practices.
Weather Policy
Rain does not necessarily stop a practice. However, if lifeguards cannot see swimmers’ legs through the water, they may close the pool until the rain eases. Of course, if there is lightning or thunder we must clear the pool deck and wait for at least 30 minutes.
Swimmers' Code of Conduct
Please talk with your child about sportsmanship. Swimmers should be friendly to members of our team and every other team. After a race, it is sportsmanlike to smile and shake hands or bump fists with the swimmer in the next lane. We always cheer for the Water Wizards, never against anyone.
